TMJ & Jaw Physiotherapy

Jaw pain, clicking, headaches, and difficulty chewing are often signs of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. We provide specialist physiotherapy for TMJ, jaw, and orofacial conditions — restoring jaw function and relieving pain through evidence-based, hands-on treatment.

How TMJ rehab works

Our TMJ Approach

01

Specialist Jaw Assessment

Detailed jaw, cervical, and orofacial examination — including range, clicking, muscular tension and habit patterns like clenching and grinding.

02

Joint & Soft-Tissue Therapy

Internal and external manual therapy to the jaw and cervical spine, plus targeted soft-tissue work on the muscles of mastication.

03

Movement & Muscle Re-Education

Re-training jaw movement patterns, posture, and breathing so the joint loads correctly during everyday function.

04

Habit & Stress Strategies

Strategies for clenching, grinding, and stress-driven tension — alongside dental input where a splint is part of the plan.

Conditions we treat

TMJ & Jaw Conditions We Treat

We assess and treat the full range of temporomandibular and orofacial presentations — and we co-manage closely with dentists and maxillofacial surgeons where the case calls for it.

TMJ Dysfunction

Pain, restricted opening, and asymmetric movement patterns from the temporomandibular joint and its supporting muscles.

Jaw Clicking & Locking

Disc-related joint sounds and intermittent locking — assessed for severity and managed with movement re-education and manual therapy.

Chronic Jaw Pain

Persistent jaw pain that has not settled with rest, splints, or dental work alone — physiotherapy often unlocks the missing piece.

Tension Headaches Linked to the Jaw

Headaches driven by jaw clenching and cervical tension — addressed across the jaw, neck, and posture together.

Bruxism & Clenching

Day- and night-time clenching and grinding patterns — co-managed with dental splint therapy where indicated.

Facial Paralysis

Bell's palsy and other facial nerve presentations — facial neuromuscular retraining to restore symmetry and function.

Post-Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Rehabilitation following orthognathic, TMJ, or other oral surgery — restoring range, function and confidence.

Cervicogenic Jaw Pain

Jaw pain that is actually being driven by upper cervical spine dysfunction — assessed and treated together.

Trigeminal & Orofacial Pain

Specialist assessment and conservative management, in coordination with your medical team where required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dentists primarily focus on dental occlusion and often provide splints. Physiotherapists address the joint itself, the surrounding muscles, and the movement patterns. The two approaches frequently work best together.

Mild to moderate TMJ dysfunction often responds within 4 to 8 sessions. More complex or chronic cases may need a longer course of treatment.

Where clinically useful and with full consent, intra-oral assessment and treatment is part of specialist TMJ physiotherapy. It is always discussed first.

Yes — we co-manage post-surgical and complex TMJ cases with dental and maxillofacial specialists.
