Orofacial & Jaw Care
Jaw Pain
Jaw clicking, headaches, difficulty chewing, or morning pain — TMJ dysfunction is more common than most people realise. Physiotherapy addresses the joint, the surrounding muscles, and the connection to your neck.

Your Jaw and Neck Are Closely Connected
TMJ disorders rarely exist in isolation. Tension in the neck, poor posture, and stress all feed into jaw pain. Our approach treats the jaw and its upstream drivers together.

What Causes Jaw Pain
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction
Misalignment or inflammation of the jaw joint causes pain, clicking, and limited mouth opening — often worse in the morning or after eating.
Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)
Grinding or clenching — often during sleep — overloads the jaw muscles and joint, producing headaches, jaw fatigue, and tooth wear.
Muscle Tension & Trigger Points
Tight masseter and temporalis muscles refer pain to the jaw, temple, and ear. Often driven by stress, screen posture, or forward head position.
Disc Displacement
The cartilage disc inside the TMJ can shift, causing clicking, locking, or reduced range of motion when opening the mouth.
Cervicogenic Contribution
Upper cervical joint and muscle dysfunction frequently contributes to jaw pain through shared nerve pathways — treating the neck alone can significantly reduce TMJ symptoms.
Post-Dental or Post-Trauma
Extended dental procedures, jaw trauma, or prolonged intubation can strain the TMJ and surrounding muscles.
How we treat it
The KINETIKA Approach
We assess jaw range of motion, joint mechanics, muscle tension, and upper cervical spine function — the jaw and neck are assessed together.
Gentle manual therapy to the TMJ and surrounding muscles — including intraoral techniques where appropriate — to restore normal joint mechanics.
Addressing forward head posture and neck stiffness that feeds into jaw tension. Corrective exercises and ergonomic advice included.
Jaw rest strategies, sleep posture guidance, and simple exercises to reduce bruxism load and maintain progress between sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Often yes. Clicking caused by disc displacement or muscle imbalance frequently responds well to manual therapy and targeted exercise. We assess the type of clicking to determine the best approach.
Not necessarily. If bruxism or bite issues are suspected, we may refer you to a dentist alongside physio — but physio alone addresses many TMJ cases effectively.
Most patients see meaningful improvement within 4–6 sessions. Chronic or complex TMJ conditions may need 8–12 sessions alongside lifestyle changes.
